The
Connecticut Citizen Election Audit Coalition was formed to
organize citizens to observe
Connecticut’s post-election audits.
Without our volunteer observers, nobody but a small
number of local election officials would know what happens
in post-election audits.
The Coalition and each of its member organizations is
non-partisan.
By law,
after each election and primary, ten percent of districts in
the election are randomly selected for post-election audit,
which is a manual count of the paper ballots in selected
races. Each
municipality with district(s) selected schedules and
conducts a count for its selected districts.
So far,
the Coalition volunteers have observed three major post-election
audits in Connecticut.
Our reports of those audits provided valuable
information to the Secretary of the State’s Office, the
Legislature, and most importantly the voters of
Connecticut.
Our first observation in November 2007 resulted in
five public legislative hearings across the state.
Each observation has resulted in improved procedures
by the Secretary of the State and improved integrity in each
subsequent audit.
Observers have reported that the observations are a great
opportunity for learning about our election system and the
challenges faced by election officials.
Observers also appreciate the opportunity to
contribute directly to election integrity and democracy
itself.
To fully
cover the 2010 post-election audits, we need more
observers, in every region of the state. You are invited to
become part of this non-partisan observer corps for the 2010
elections.
The Coalition will provide observer materials and one
hour of training via conference call.
Citizens will donate one full day observing and
reporting on the audits.
